GCF Grants to NGOs Working in Africa

 

Peace Child International

Democratic Republic of Congo

Funding amount: $8,130

Goals: Repair and revive a computer center for youth in Bukavu, Congo.

By connecting 5 computers to the Internet, this grant will provide information technology training classes and create employment opportunities for approximately 50 youth. The center will also be open to the local community in the evenings to provide access and generate additional income.

Project Concern 

Zambia

Funding amount: $48,000

Goals: Link NGO service providers in Zambia through a management information system. 

This system is providing the information needed to plan programs and to provide appropriate care for children living on the streets of Lusaka. GCF funds are establishing and maintaining a central database and an NGO workstation at Project Concern's central office. Staff from 8 NGOs in the Lusaka area, as well as the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, are training to use the database.

WorldTeach, Inc.

Namibia

Funding Amount: $16,000

Goals: Provide targeted Namibian secondary schools with basic Internet literacy, build the capacity of Namibian teachers to integrate ICT into classroom strategies, distribute information and resource materials relevant to school networking, and develop and facilitate effective channels for communication & information sharing among participating schools. 

School Net Namibia is providing more than 300 schools with access to the Internet over the next 4 years, including 75 schools in 2001. School Net has already equipped 93 educational institutions with Internet access, and some 300 learners and educators have received training at 33 training centers. A GCF grant to WorldTeach will help provide this training.
