Relief International - Schools Online

Global Citizenship and Youth Philanthropy Program

Funding Amount: $110,000

Using information and communications technologies, GCYP focuses at the classroom level on the education and empowerment of youth and enables them to become global citizens and leaders, participate responsibly in civic activities, and acquire the knowlwdge, skills, and values that support cross-cultural understanding and the democratic process. The pilot phase of GCYP has been implemented in 25 schools in the United States, 2 internet-connected schools in Kabul, Afghanistan, and 24 RI-SOL supported internet-connected schools across Tajikistan. The GCYP website, www.globalkidsconnect.org, serves as a fun and interactive site for students to learn more about global citizenship.

Initial program partners are the National Geographic Society and UCLA's International Institute.

 

Room to Read

Nepal Computer Lab Pilot Project

Funding Amount: $30,000

This pilot project established computer labs in 6 schools in Nepal through a competetive challenge grant process and implemented a teacher training program to support the labs. An evaluation study of the project enabled local educational authorities to replicate labs and the curriculum in other schools. The project led to the development of a strategic plan for further sustainable Room to Read Technology Programs in Nepal and Vietnam designed to meet local needs, exchange expertise, and create a lasting impact on the education system through the use of ICTs.

Computers on Wheels

Andhra Pradesh, India

Funding Amount: $10,000

Goals: Provide ICT access for 7 villages in the Mahbubnagar district.

With funding from Digital Partners (Seattle), the government of Andhra Pradesh, and Global Catalyst Foundation, this pilot project will provide information to participating villages on topics such as health, agriculture, education, and general news. The 7 villages will have daily access to a laptop computer transported via motorcycle, providing regular information services in an area with limited basic infrastructure.

Al Batoof Center at Central Galilee College

Sakhinin, Israel

Funding amount: $41,410

Goal: Establish public Internet access for students and community members in an Arab village in the Galilee area.

This computer center will be used for classes and research by students of the Central Galilee College. They plan to participate in projects with other schools, and provide a forum for contact between Arab and Jewish students. The center will also be available for use after school hours to serve the local community, which has contributed funds for the development of the center.

Schools Online/UNRWA Jordan

Amman, Jordan

Funding amount: $29,350

Goals: Establish an Internet learning center at a refugee school in Amman, Jordan.

The United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) school in Amman has 4000 Palestinian students. GCF funds will contribute towards the purchase of equipment and Internet access. The project also includes teacher professional development workshops and participation in regional conferences.

Netaid.org Foundation and Peace Child International

Vietnam

Funding Amount: $9,919

Hoa Mai Orphanage, Vietnam:

Goals: Increase contacts between orphans and children in the surrounding community, and encourage contacts with the outside world. Provide skills for orphans to improve their futures.

This project will provide 4 networked computers, an Internet connection, and skills training to an orphanage of 45 children run by the Montlucon-Saigon Association. Training courses and access will also enable members of the surrounding community to use the facility, encouraging contact and cooperation.

Relief International - Afghan Refugee Emergency Assistance Operation

Afghani Refugees in Pakistan and Tajikistan

Funding Amount: $50,000

Goals: Reduce mortality and disease among refugees and refugee-affected populations in Pakistan and Tajikistan; support and strengthen existing health systems; empower and build capacity of Afghani health workers in preparation for repatriation.

Emergency Mobile Health Clinics and way stations will be established to address the health care needs of Afghani refugees in Pakistan and Tajikistan. Each clinic will be capable of treating up to 30,000 refugees over a two-month period. GCF's contribution will support the computers and systems necessary to treat and monitor patients, collect epidemiological data and share it among NGOs and government authorities, and establish a basis for the future development of communities and health care systems. Other aspects of this program include training and support for Afghani health workers among the refugees, who will return to Afghanistan to continue health care work when feasible.

Global Children

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Funding amount: $1500

Goals: Improve the capacity of Cambodian staff members to work with aid recipients in Cambodia and with Global Children staff in the US. Provide tools for the Cambodian staff to advance their skills in general.

Global Children, based in New York, is using GCF funds to purchase a computer, a printer, and a scanner for use by Cambodian staff in Phnom Penh, who previously operated with borrowed equipment and Internet cafés for access. They are working with many projects in Cambodia including a cultural education program at an orphanage, a health and environment improvement program for urban squatter communities, and a professional education and scholarship program. The projects are currently reaching about 200 children and 1000 families. The new equipment is already being used to research an immunization project.

Achva College

Negev, Israel

Funding amount: $45,000

Goals: Improve education access and standards for Bedouin students.

This project is providing computers and training for Bedouin students attending Achva College in the Negev region of Israel. By fostering higher enrollment and graduation rates through peer tutoring and increased access to ICT, these students are going to increase their living standards and their position in their own community, as well as improve the position of their community in Israeli society.

 

Relief International

Azerbaijan

Funding Amount: $49,818

Goals: Empower refugees, internally displaced people, and the rural population in targeted areas of Azerbaijan by providing increased access to a wider array of information. Facilitate and encourage participation by these groups in the global arena of governance and business. 

Relief International, in partnership with Open Society Institute and the Global Catalyst Foundation, is implementing the Community Information Resource Center (CIRC) project in the central libraries of 7 regions of Azerbaijan. Each center is providing access to the Internet, E-mail, periodicals, and books for community members, and developing career centers for students and unemployed individuals using human and Internet resources. Funds are also providing training for over 4,000 new computer users. For youth in these communities a hands-on, instructional experience with computers and technology are promoting the development of marketable computer and technology skills. These skills will link the youth and the community with the global economy and international society, and provide access to multi-lateral exchanges.

Follow Your Dream Cambodia and Digital Divide Data 

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Funding amount: $25,000 matching grant

Goals: Establish a viable nonprofit technology outsourcing business to employ disadvantaged people in Cambodia.

Follow Your Dream is training staff and developing a computer facility with Internet access in Phnom Penh for revenue-generating data entry jobs. The job creation program will allow under-privileged Cambodians access to opportunities in the global economy. Local partners, including an existing computer training facility, are participating in this process. This nonprofit venture, called Digital Divide Data, is creating a sustainable, revenue generating business by providing a range of technical services similar to technology outsourcing operations in India and elsewhere.
