empowering people through technology

About 40 kilometers northeast of Kasulu is the Mtabila refugee camp. 50,000 Burundians live here, and many have been in the camp for 10 years or more. The primary focus of the Kasulu Mtabila Internet Project has always been to reconnect these refugees with the outside world.

This building at the camp was constructed by refugees specifically to house the Community Internet Center. It is powered by 48 solar panels in 2 adjustable arrays that can track the sun to maximum solar exposure. The VSAT dish is visible in the center of the photo.

Inside the CIC, Burundian refugees engage in a wide variety of courses and activities. This includes distance learning programs, Cisco Certified Network Associate and International Computer Driver's License classes, and basic computer literacy.
