GCF Small Tech Grants Competition

Small Tech Grants Competition 2001

10 Countries

Funding amount: $50,000 total

Goals: Rapidly address the critical technology needs of small international NGOs, and to assist these organizations in gaining wider support.

In April, 2001, GCF sent a request for proposals to a number of US-based nonprofits. We asked them to find small-scale grassroots organizations outside the US that needed $5000 or less to apply ICTs to existing or proposed projects. In May we received 39 proposals from around the world. These grassroots organizations requested support for computer equipment, training courses, website development, and network enhancements; applications of this support included cultural programs, general education, administrative capacity, and even an online city council in Bulgaria. 10 finalists were chosen, and a select panel of judges chose 5 of these for our initial funding budget of $25,000. In the course of the evaluations, an additional $25,000 was secured for this Competition from an anonymous donor, enabling GCF to fund the next 5 finalists.
